The first day I met Steve was when I started working for MIT...in California. One of the very first things Steve did was shake my hand, say hello, and then asked me to touch his forehead and feel the staples that were in his skull. And that was the beginning of my crazy summer with Steve and his impact on the rest of my Media Lab experiences.
We (he) chased skunks, photographed opossums at night, taught me that you can buy uranium on Amazon, and helped me siphon mosquito larvae out of giant tubs (some photo evidence attached). All this while trying to build a giant robot 3D printer with our tiny team and traveling the world to give talks about healthcare, personal data, and his experiences with cancer. We spent many days together in that isolated warehouse out in CA, and got to talk a lot about our common interests in building and inventing things, but also our desires to see what's on the bottom of the ocean (and I'm glad to see he did!!). Steve taught me what it means to dream big and actually go for it, how to face insurmountable challenges with curiosity and determination, and to do it all by having a blast and an insanely positive attitude. With Steve, the journey was always just as important as the goal, if not much more so. Thanks so much for all the lessons and you'll be missed dearly!
