Thinking of Steve as Halloween approaches. Our first fall at MIT, Steve and I decided that we’d lean into our token Canadian personas and we’d make our own mountie costumes for Halloween. We found the perfect red women’s blazers at the second-hand shop (not matching, but close enough), black sweatpants with a red stripe, and the finishing touch - some Amazon-purchased felt hats. We put a “Studley Do-Right” badge on his blazer and a “Major Heartbreaker” badge on mine. We got second place at the Sidney Pacific Halloween competition (we was robbed). We were invited by Steve’s advisor David (another proud Canadian) to wear our costumes to 2.009 (4th year design class) to “guard” the imported Canadian candy bars that David had purchased for his students. This started a great tradition - every Halloween, Steve and I would dress up as mounties and attend the 2.009 Halloween class, where the TAs and David would be dressed in their awesome costumes. One year a bunch of Steve’s buddies joined us in costume, continuing the myth that all Canadians are issued a mountie costume upon birth.
mounties, halloween
