My first memory of Steve was when I took visiting friends on one of those lab tours that slightly annoyed all of us, but he was friendly and quickly but enthusiastically explained what he was up to in what had been my first workspace in the lab and now was Neri’s space - maybe 2012 or 13?
When he shared his cancer news with all of us I reached out because I admired his fight for patient rights and his believe in opening up health data - but let’s say we agreed to disagree on personal privacy of health status and why not everyone could/should/needed to follow his path.
This didn’t sit on the forefront of our emails though, it was a lot more about jokes, the crazy machines one would be literally bolted into for some procedures and how important it was to enjoy ourselves and life:
So let me end with a quote from one of his emails:
“Here’s to tropical sun and coconuts!”
