In the last few years I was fortunate to go on a number of trips to either visit Steve in whatever new city he was living in, or travel with him on his bucket list trip.
In 2014, a group of us went to Boston to visit Steve for Halloween. Having lived in the US for a while at this point, Steve was always proud of his Canadian roots and organized five RCMP costumes for the group. He was super excited to show us around MIT and Cambridge, but first insisted that we all get dressed up before going for the tour. We dutifully suited up and spent the entire day around the MIT and Harvard campuses where we got to explore Steve’s prized media lab. He had even organized for us to attend a MIT undergrad presentation to hand out candy to the students. I’ll never forget how excited and proud Steve was to show us his MIT dream.
More recently, just last September (2018), I went to Honduras to join Steve on his bucket list trip. Steve’s storied dance moves definitely came out on this trip, and there was some memorable karaoke, but the highlight was the final day spent hunting for real pirate treasure on a remote part of the island. I’ve never seen anyone that excited to spend hours in the hot, humid jungle, but every piece of pirate glass made him light up like it was Christmas morning and I was honoured to be able to be a part of that.
Steve is truly one of the most incredible people I’ve ever met and I’ll hold a piece of his curiosity, positivity and humour with me forever. Love you buddy.
