I only knew Steve through badminton, but I spent many, many hours playing with and against him. He was one of the best players without question, but more importantly the kindest, most honest, most humble.. most enjoyable person on the court. He thoroughly thrashed me countless times yet somehow encouraged me all the while. We often lost points together laughing, no regrets.
When I informed the rest of our Apple Badminton club (473 members around the world but mostly here in the Bay Area) about Steve, I was flooded with responses from all those who played with him. He radiated pure joy playing and everybody felt it. I also informed the Amazon team since to this day people ask me who those guys were who played “that match” against them in the spring of 2018. They’re referring to a Men’s Doubles match between Apple and Amazon in which Steve and his partner (Jeff Kuo) just barely lost a three game nail-biter against Amazon’ best players (visiting from Singapore and LA "coincidentally”). It was an elite match that blew us all away. I was surprised to find out that nobody in either club even knew about his medical background, as he clearly didn’t let it define him.
I have watched Steve’s TEDx speech (which I also forwarded to everybody with the MIT News article) several times. His sincerity, curiosity, humor, and.. pure emotion bring a tearful smile to my face each time. My heartfelt admiration to Steven's family for raising such an amazing man, and his friends for helping him blossom. Here are some team pictures and a video featuring Steve. We tend to get involved in the matches and forget to record.. which is usually a good thing!
