On Oct 20, 2019 we had the annual Apple Badminton Open in celebration of Steven. I started with a short speech to the participants in attendance and their friends & family (~150 people). I went over his amazing medical experiences, and emphasized that we were celebrating his curiosity, his kindness, his humor, and his passion for medical record sharing. I asked everybody instead of a "somber moment of silence" to take every spare moment to ACT, to smile, to be curious, to be kind, to leverage our excellent donation-matching program to give to meaningful causes, and to call those on-the-line shots IN (Steven always erred in my favor when we played singles Saturday mornings, although it still wasn’t enough to make me win! 😉). I managed to keep my composure for another couple minutes and take some group pictures like the one below before taking my own minute of emotional reflection. It’s amazing to be in a world where crying openly is accepted and encouraged, and the badminton community is like a second family for many of us.
To the left of the middle of the picture you can just see a framed picture being held up. One of Steven’s team captains from 2018, Grace Qiu, printed a team picture from the 2018 BACBC (Bay Area Corporate Badminton Challenge) tournament. Steven was a big highlight of that year, and is shown smiling as always. Close-up to come!
